Dani Faucher RMT has submitted herself as a Covid-safe Registered Massage Therapist in London Ontario, Canada. Here’s what she has to say about why she has submitted herself as a Covid-safe provider of massage therapy services in London, Ontario. Do note her “Risks” section as well.
I’m an RMT/Registered Massage Therapist in London Ontario, Canada. I have been practising consistent aerosol precautions in my clinic since first being allowed to reopen in June 2020,then maintaining, adapting and improving protocols as more information and tools became available.
Back in the first year of Covid I heard the first talk of Long Covid and have been an avid learner since then, following key healthcare professionals, researchers and scientists, reading research, (mostly via Twitter) and lurking in patient forums in order to appreciate the lived experience of those with post-covid issues and Long Covid.
I admin the Facebook group “RMTs Learning Long Covid” with almost 600 followers, and have presented several webinars on Long Covid for RMTs and the Ontario RMT Association (RMTAO) in Ontario and Canada, and developed a fledgling spreadsheet of aerosol-practising RMTs and allied health in SW Ontario. I keep my RMT network updated on C19 infection status and mitigation options referring to COVID-19 Resources Canada for current data.
My clinical interest is working with people with chronic pain conditions, catastrophic injury, and autoimmune conditions, so Long Covid fits right in.
My clinic:
Home-based clinic (at front of home)
large room HEPA (Levoit)
window open (extra heating on table and heating pads if needed)
CO2 monitors (Wave)
N95 worn by RMT (3M VFlex mostly)
CN95 or better masks required for patients unless medically unable (will be provided if nec)
patient screening (cancellation fee waived if exposed/sick to encourage people to stay home)
Long Covid aware (screening for PEM/PESE)
bookings only/no walk-ins. Stable patient base, non-C19 literate patients have long since gone elsewhere, new patients are usually by referral or word of mouth from covid-conscious people.
30 minute between patients to air the room, first appt of the day can be requested
outdoor initial intake on the front porch or garden if weather permits to limit time in the room.
pre-initial session discussion welcomed to ensure new patients feel comfortable
virtual sessions available for initial intake, remedial exercise follow-up and progression, and more.Risks:
2 kids in high school. Mitigations:
can’t guarantee masking, kids are exposed much of the day
do oral/nasal swabs randomly as well as when indicated
CR box running 24/7 outside kids’ bedrooms
I call upcoming patients if I think any householder may be ‘on watch’ and let them decide to attend or reschedule based on their comfort/risk factor.
Any householders ‘on watch’ are isolated, have their own HEPA unit in their room, and N95 mask if outside of their room.
Please contact me if you need more information, I’m happy to support this initiative.
